Previously, pre-movement testing was not required when animals were moved to shows provided they were either returned to the farm of origin or went to slaughter after the show. The exemption will remain for movements to shows where cattle are not held for more than 24 hours and are not housed.

John Broomhall has stepped down after 25 years as chairman of Nantwich Agricultural Society which stages the event every July at Dorfold Park.

The retired auctioneer of Nantwich has also served 40 years on the show committee helping it grow to become the largest one day agricultural event in the UK and home to the International Cheese awards which attracts entries from across the globe.

His retirement party at Crewe Alexandra on Sunday saw a large crowd gather to pay tribute to the man known as ‘Mr Nantwich Show.’

Society President John Lea said: “From very small beginnings in 1897, the Society now takes the name of Nantwich industry world-wide. This has been an incredible achievement and over the last four decades John Broomhall has been a driving force behind that success. He is held in high regard by his friends and colleagues who turned out in force to wish him well in his retirement.”

Mr Broomhall, a former Vice Chairman of Wright Manley, has handed over the famous black bowler hat worn every show day to another society stalwart, Michael-John Parkin.

The sales director at Barnett Jones and Cooke agricultural insurance specialists in Nantwich, said: “I am delighted to be taking on the role of chairman. As a former dairy farmer, my family have been involved in the show for 50 years. John Broomhall has done a sterling job and will be tough act to follow.”

John Lea, managing director of Mornflake in Crewe, presented Mr Broomhall with a large framed picture capturing memories of his time as chairman and his wife, Elizabeth, presented Mrs Rosemary Broomhall with flowers.

New for 2013 is a Native British Breeds class for non- accredited sheep

Why don’t you start your youngsters off by entering them in the Junior Handler’s ( under 14) class? We would love to see them involved and will give them every advice and assistance that we can. (The sheep must be drawn from classes1 to 29).

Schedules are ready now and will be sent out to previous exhibitors in due course but if you are showing for the first time they will be available from the secretariat from May onwards.

Also there is a non-competitive section showing some of the different breeds of sheep that have been developed in this country over hundreds of years. This is a non- competitive section. If you would like to be considered to take part in this section contact Kevin Hammersley at the number shown below. Space is at a premium so acceptance cannot be guaranteed.

All the sheep will be penned in the open and segregation rules regarding accredited and non- accredited sheep will be strictly enforced. Exhibitors will be responsible for providing the relevant documentation in respect of the current animal health regulations. You may bring along some cover for yourselves and your sheep but please remember that space is limited.

Weather permitting, we will be holding our ever popular shearing demonstration with interviews with Tom Ryan, our expert shearer, and in depth commentary from Chis Lewis. Please arrive in good time as this is a very well attended event which is scheduled for 2 o’clock.

On display will be garments made from Jacob sheep wool and we hope to have a spinning demonstration going on from time to time.

Members of the public are free to walk round at all times and will find the various activities of great interest. Judging begins at 10.00prompt.

Come along and take part at a wonderful parkland setting and help to keep alive an important British tradition of agricultural shows.

Competitive sections open to all men, women and children, remember you do not need to belong to any organisation or group to enter. Also there are no rules to where you live.

You will find classes in

Wine – Homemade red wine, white wine even homemade liqueur.

Preserves – Jams, marmalade and chutney

Produce – this is where the talented baker can shine making pizza or brownies, look out for the decorated novelty cakes always a wonderful show.

Handicraft – lots of wonderful examples of peoples talent on show here beadwork, knitting, embroidery plus many more.

Art – This section has grown over the years, art in all medium pencil/ink, oils, watercolour, pastels, and acrylics

Photography – this year’s subjects are “Mother Nature” and “A Sports Day”. Also a black and white photograph any subject.

Children’s Section – This is where the children have their own section classes inc, baking drawing model making. Many of the children enter from an early age then progress onto the adult classes.

Co-operative classes – these make a wonderful addition to the section and are open to groups of people or individuals.

The section has 15 trophies which are presented to the winners on show day in the section at 4.30pm. Prize money totals over £600 and is given out in the section at 6pm on show day.
